About

THE DARKHORSE LODGE STORY

Kirk and Gretchen Catherwood established Darkhorse Lodge in the wake of their son's tragic loss to combat in Afghanistan. This retreat offers a serene environment where veterans from all military branches can gather to relax, fish on Kentucky Lake, immerse in nature, and connect with others who share similar experiences. Darkhorse Lodge operates as a non-profit with 501(c)(3) status, dedicated to providing veterans a place for healing and camaraderie.

In the short film below, discover how the Catherwood family turned tragic loss into the impactful mission of Darkhorse Lodge.

22

22 United States Combat Veterans take their own lives per day. That's over 8,000 lives per year. Many are battling with PTSD and other post combat related struggles. DarkHorse Lodge aims to reduce that number if at all possible by offering a peaceful retreat where veterans can come and stay at no charge to them. But, we need your help. Your gift makes it all possible.

SUPPORT OUR MISSION, HELP OUR VETERANS.

THE LODGE

At Darkhorse Lodge, we proudly offer five cabins, each featuring five uniquely designed bedrooms, providing a total capacity to host up to 25 guests at once. Every room is thoughtfully named in honor of one of the 25 brave men lost from the Marine Corps’ 3/5 Darkhorse unit, serving as a living tribute to their sacrifice. Our retreat provides combat veterans with comfortable lodging, hearty meals, engaging activities, and the chance to fish the serene waters of Kentucky Lake—all at no cost to our veterans. It’s a place to rest, reflect, and reconnect with fellow veterans in a setting that honors their service.

OPERATING HOURS

The Lodge is open April through October each year (closed from November through February) and is open Tuesday through Saturday each week (closed Sunday and Monday).
